Stalking Statues in Slovakia

by Alex in Europe, Photos, Topdeck

The last time we spoke, dear reader - an embarrassingly long time ago - we were well into our whirlwind Topdeck tour of Europe. After Italy and Austria, and on our way to Hungary, Poland and the Czech Republic, we had one small stop to make - the beautiful, if slightly chilly, Bratislava, Slovakia.

Wandering down the cobblestone streets and squares, our awesome and ever-patient tour leader Kaz tried really hard to give us a brief history of the capital. But to be fair, we weren't really listening. We were distracted by all the statues. So, so many statues.

Bratislava is apparently filled to the brim with statues, which is any Doctor Who fan's worst nightmare. But cameras in tow and a true sense of the ridiculous turned an army of the creepy and lifeless, into fun, recreational living art.

In the main square of the city, we found this charming fellow, who inspired so many displays of affection. Some, like the girls above, found the opportunity to be sweet...

...and some less so.

And... then there's me.

Directly across from my Napoleon-hatted battle mount stood the most magnificently muscled piece of hi-fi electronics any of us had ever seen.

And the girls seem to flock to him!

Around the corner Car found this rather dapper silver gentleman...

...Although he seemed to have a thing for Carlos.

Our cameras, feeling tired and overworked, needed a pit stop. Being the fantastic worldly travellers we are, we pulled into a little local place called McDonalds. Yes, that McDonalds. I know - call us terrible travellers if you want, but sometimes when you're low on time or funds, Mickey D's becomes a happy, welcome place.

Besides, if we hadn't stopped there, how would we have learned that Slovakian McDonalds offers Coke, juice or a pint of beer with every Happy Meal? Or a glass of wine, if your kindergartner is feeling more cultured.

(Tash tried to take a photo of the menu to prove it, but apparently taking photos in restaurants is very strictly prohibited - so no such luck!)

Straight after our lunch, we walked into this profoundly creepy couple, leaving Car casually concerned...

...and Carlos freaked the fuck out.

Unfortunately it appears this is a popular art choice across the city.

As we had no more than a brief pit stop in Bratislava, time was quickly running out.

A quick and frustrating run in with pickpockets left our party short one smartphone and threatened to leave our happy little band in the serious dumps, when we happened upon this cheerful guy - smiling and happy, chilling out in a manhole in the street.

And honestly, it just seemed like too good an idea to pass up.

It can be easy to say that you haven't really seen a city until you've stayed in it for weeks, living like a local - but sometimes, an afternoon is all you get. An afternoon to wander around, have fun with new friends, eat cheap touristy food, and yes, hunt for as many statues as you can.

And for one afternoon, what more could you ask for?
